Measurement of a Man: Engines, Horse Power, Pipes and More

The men in my life are diverse, so when trying to size them up I use their relationships with automobiles as a way to help me understand them fuller.

My father has now retired, but was a professional geologist. He has always been very outdoorsy. He’s known for chipping a stone here, gather a fossil over there. He is unquestionably a man’s man, but has never been very loving of any kind of machinery. Gears and motors have a way of producing his inner beast even though he is a real gentleman. I can recall times when I was very young, seeing my dad with his head under the hood of a car and hearing him swearing at the Industrial Age.

My father would always change the tires on our Volkswagen van when they needed it, but you would never see him admire aftermarket center caps or custom chrome grille work on a car. You might see him checking the water level in the radiator or putting some Rustoleum on spots that had rusted on the van, but you would never see him using a toothbrush to scrub headlamps or using Q-tips to clean the knobs on the dash. These things just didn’t take place in our garage.

On the other hand, my father-in-law is a complete car man through and through. I wouldn’t be surprised if he knew every make, model, and year of every car that ever travelled the Pennsylvania turnpike. He is happy to spend a Weekend afternoon checking out cars at an Antique Car Club Rally or scouring the whitewalls on his car.

He graduated quickly from a teething ring to a pitchfork and pliers while growing up in a rural area of Pennsylvania. Learning all about animal husbandry and the ABCs of mechanics was required of young farm boys. His interest in things with gadgets, wheels, and motors seemed to stick even though any fondness for animals did not. He made the choice to leave the farm and go to college and he never looked back.

My husband is a teacher, just like his father and my father, but that is where their similarities finish. He doesn’t meticulously clean his cars, collect rocks, or go camping. He likes to spend Saturdays enjoy java at a local Starbuck, grading papers, and connecting with friends on Facebook.

He has no trouble putting fuel in his car, but he would in all probability use his American Racing center caps as paperweights on his desk, than as a trendy way to floss his ride. Not that he has anything against anyone who toils over their center caps. He vacuums his vehicle twice a year, but is satisfied to ride about town with “Wash me!” scrawled above his rusty bumper for a year at a time.

My daughter’s boyfriend is a juiced up variation of my father-in-law. (I think they would bond quickly if sent together on an errand to a car parts shop.) The Boyfriend got a aftermarket exhaust kit for Christmas and is pleased now that his car’s tailpipe rumbles deeply, letting everyone know he has arrived. “I can hear him coming a mile away,” my daughter grins, obviously in the throes of young passion.

It’s true that men and the relationships they have with their automobiles are complicated. It seems that their relationships can be an reflection of some men’s masculinity, while other men treat their cars as an opponent that’s a nuisance that must be conquered or endured.

Many name their automobiles, and others blaspheme them. Some handle their vehicles with TLC, while others declare bragging rights because their car or truck is beaten or has the most mileage. Car stories are exchanged over beers, like war stories used to be told around a campfire.

This is the reason the auto industry can sell billions of dollars worth of window tinting, aftermarket center caps, dashboard accessories, chrome, seat covers, wheels, car alarms, backup sensors, hoods, tailpipes, and decals.

Whether the wheels in the driveway are fodder for cursing or cooing, I believe there’s some inescapable mechanical mojo going on – something akin to “If you build it, he will come.”
